The Abial Edwards papers primarily consist of letters Edwards wrote to his friend and later wife, Anna Conant, during the Civil War and subsequent occupation duty. There also are a few letters to his sister Marcia that are noted on the folders, a letter from sisters Josie and Kate, and letters from George Whitman, a friend with whom he served. The papers include a diary that Edwards kept from September 1862-January 1863, a transcript of a song, and a list of graves in Soldiers Cemetery, Georgetown, South Carolina.

Abial Hall Edwards was born on 28 May 1843 in Casco, Maine. He enlisted with Company K, 10th Maine Infantry Regiment on 6 September 1861 and reenlisted with the 29th Maine Infantry Regiment in 1863. Edwards served in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and fought at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. He was also at Antietam. After reenlisting, Edwards and the 29th went to Louisiana for the Red River Campaign and then back to the Shenandoah Valley. Edwards participated in the Grand Review in Washington, D....
